Y6 STEM Week 2022

25th Feb 2022

For STEM week, Y6 have engaged in an electronics project which builds on the skills and knowledge we have previously developed in our science unit on electricity. We have designed a children's game incorporating an electrical circuit whereby the player must carefully move an aluminum hoop along a wire without touching it. If the hoop touches the wire then a lightbulb is triggered.

Firstly, we designed a scientific diagram of the electrical circuit that we would build, ensuring that we used the correct electrical symbols for each component. We then studied various product packaging and every child designed their own unique packaging for their toy, complete with a name and instructions.

Finally, we began to build our circuits. Using aluminum wire we constructed the hoop and wire components of our game, before using wire strippers to connect each component using electrical wire. We then attached electrical insulation tape to the aluminum to create a safe handle and our games were complete!

On Wednesday, the Y6 children were also treated to a hugely interesting and exciting experience in the Wonderdome -  a large planetarium which allowed the children to observe a very realistic reconstruction of the night's sky and various planets and stars within the cosmos! We loved learning about the different areas within space that may be conducive to life, as well as learning some incredible facts about our own planet and Solar System.
