Y6 Maths: Unknown Values

17th Oct 2025

This week in Y6 maths, we have been exploring how to use bar models when calculating unknown values. We established the principle that, if the value of the whole is known, along with the values of all but one of the parts, the missing part can be calculated. In order to better articulate mathematical structures such as this, we learnt some new terminology, including 'addend', 'minuend' and 'subtrahend'.

We shall continue to build upon this learning on Monday, when children will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding by constructing their own bar models based on given mathematical equations.
