Y4 Science: Investigating Teeth!

21st Oct 2025

This week, Y4 started their new science unit focusing digestion.

In their first lesson they compared the teeth of carnivores (meat-eaters) with those of herbivores (plant-eaters) and considered how the shape of their teeth help them to either tear or grind their food.

They then considered omnivores (meat and plant eaters) have a combination of both types of teeth. Humans are omnivores and therefoere have both types!

In their first experiment, the children used dry crackers to explore the importance of saliva in helping them to swallow and taste. In their second experiment, they investigated how different areas of a tongue detect different 'tastes', for example, sweetness, sourness, saltiness and bitterness.
