Y4 Science: Testing Conductors and Insulators

20th Jan 2026

This week, our Y4 Scientists planned and undertook fair experiments to test the conductivity of different materials by adapting their simple electrical circuit from the previous lesson. Our Y4 scientists discovered that metals conduct electricity, whereas non-metals like wood do not, because they act as insulators.

However, The children were surprised to discover that the graphite, which is what is inside our pencils, and makes the mark, does conduct electricity!

Our children considered how conductors are used in everyday life and how insulators keep us safe.
