Y4 History: Anglo-Saxon Crime & Punishment!

10th Oct 2025

In this week's history lesson, our Y4 children learned all about Anglo-Saxon law and punishment.

They learned all about the Wergild and how every injury or loss had a value attached and even loss of life could be settled by a fine! We learned about the Anglo Saxon Trial by Ordeal which determined whether the accused was innocent or guilty.

They then asked a jury to consider four scenarios and decide whether an Anglo Saxon or modern British justice punishment was most appropriate.

The jury were surprisingly tough on crime! Well done, everybody!
