Y1 Science: What do animals eat?

26th Nov 2025

The children already knew that animals eat different types of food, and this week they learned what makes an animal a herbivore, carnivore or omnivore. Working in groups, they looked at pictures of animals alongside what they eat and sorted each one into the correct category.

We also explored three piles of (playdough) animal poo. Using their knowledge and detective skills, the children examined what each sample contained — pretend bones, grass, meat or leaves — and worked out which poo belonged to a herbivore, a carnivore or an omnivore.

Can your child tell you what herbivores eat? Carnivores? Omnivores?
