Y1 Science: Learning About Plants

19th Apr 2026

Our Y1 children started their latest science topic, 'Plants', this week. They first recalled what they already knew about plants before spending a little time wondering about what they would like to discover.

They looked closely at a variety of seeds and bulbs before planting sunflower seeds. These will be monitored closely by the children over the coming weeks, with changes being recorded by the children in their plant diaries.

In addition, everyone planted a courgette seed, which we hope will grow well so they will be ready later in the term so they can be enjoyed at home. At home, you might like to plant other seeds and encourage your child to help care for them. You can use seeds from tomatoes and apples and peppers that you have at home if you like.
