Y1 Science: Investigating Materials

14th Jan 2026

As part of our new topic, Materials, the children have been learning to name an object (for example, a jumper) and then identify the material it is made from (such as fabric). They really enjoyed naming their chosen objects and confidently stating the material names.

The children also completed a materials 'hunt' in class, working together with a partner.

Please see below for the key vocabulary we have introduced today. Some children are still a little unsure of certain material names, so you might like to support them at home by choosing a material and searching for objects made from it. For example: metal – a metal spoon, key or tap.

We will continue to revisit and reinforce this important vocabulary each week during our science lessons.
