Y1 Science: Grouping Animals
The children in Y1 began a new topic today all about animals. They started by recalling what they already knew — and we discovered that they remembered an impressive amount from their time in FS2!
Harvey reminded us that some animals are nocturnal, which means they sleep during the day and are awake at night.
When asked, “What is an animal?”, the children sorted picture cards under the headings Animal and Not an Animal, deciding that animals are living things that move, eat, and — as they put it — “poo!”
Next, the children were challenged to sort the animal pictures into their own chosen groups. They found it easiest to group the birds, though some of the other animals were a little trickier to classify.
In their next lesson, the children will begin to sort animals more scientifically, learning to group them as mammals, fish, invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, or birds.
