Y1 Phonics Screening Assessment

27th Mar 2026

In line with national requirements, Year 1 children will take the statutory Phonics Screening Check during the week commencing 8th June 2026.

The check requires children to read a list of 40 words to an adult. Twenty of these words are real and twenty are ‘alien’ (nonsense) words. Children are asked to sound out each word, blend the sounds together, and then say the word. This usually takes around five minutes.

Phonics is taught daily as part of our Read Write Inc. programme, as well as during class phonics sessions linked to spelling. Children regularly read both real and nonsense words, applying their phonics knowledge, and are familiar with the format of the check.

We will be holding a meeting for parents and carers to discuss the Y1 Phonics Screening Check on Tuesday 28th April 2026 at 3.30pm.

The meeting will take place in the Y6 classroom, with supervised childcare available. A reminder will be shared nearer the time.

It is very important that you make every effort to attend, as we will explain the process and how you can support your child at home.

Your child has brought home a booklet containing the phonemes (sounds) they have been learning throughout the year, along with activities to support their learning. We hope they enjoy using it.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 28th April 2026.
