Y1 Mathematics: Investigating Lengths

11th May 2026

Our Y1 children have begun learning about length. They explored this by collecting sticks on the school field and then working with a partner in the outdoor area to compare them. They used key vocabulary such as long, longer, short and shorter.

In the next lesson, they will build on this by comparing more than two objects, using longest and shortest, including when working with groups of sticks or multi-link cube “trains”.

The children will also compare height, using vocabulary such as tall, taller, tallest, short, shorter and shortest.

They will then move on to measuring using non-standard units, before progressing to standard units such as metres and centimetres.

Look out for the length themed home learning ,on the class page, later this week (a paper copy will be sent home).
