Y1 Mathematics: Investigating 2D Shapes

20th Jan 2026

Y1 have been naming and describing 2D shapes. They have tried hard to use the correct mathematical vocabulary including:

  • side
  • curved
  • straight
  • vertices
  • corner

They really enjoyed playing a game of 'Guess My Shape' in which they asked their partners questions like, "Does the shape have a equal sides?"

Everyone even created fantastic picture made up of the different shapes we have been learning about. At home you might like to go on a shape hunt looking for examples of the different shapes you can find at home, including: squares, rectangles, circles and triangles!
