Y1 History: Sorting Toys

6th Oct 2025

Following on from last week (when the children discussed their own toys), the Y1 children looked, today, at a range of toys from today and the past. They were history detectives looking for clues to help them to decide if the toy was one they might have and play with, or if it was an older toy from the past.

Some of the clues they considered included:

  • the overall condition of the toys
  • the material they were made from
  • how they moved and operate
  • whether they needed batteries
  • whether they were familiar

Everyone enjoyed investigating (and playing with) the toys, with an old toy 'Pick up Sticks' the firm favourite for most! The children have been asked to talk to grownups at home or from their extended families to learn about the favourite toys they used to play with.
