A TRIPLE THREAT AS SJF STARS TAKE SHEFFIELD BY STORM!

5th Jun 2026
Three Teams, Two Days, and One Incredible Display of Talent, Teamwork and Determination!

The bright lights of Sheffield United Academy's prestigious Shirecliffe training ground provided the backdrop this week as three St John Fisher football teams battled it out against the very best schools in the city. Whilst trophies may have proved elusive, our players left the competition with something just as valuable – pride, admiration and the reputation of being among Sheffield's finest young footballers.

YEAR 5 BOYS KICK OFF WITH A BANG!

Tuesday saw our Y5 boys launch St John Fisher's finals campaign in style.

A brilliant opening victory, sealed by a superbly taken goal, sent confidence soaring and supporters dreaming of a deep tournament run. The boys played with energy, intelligence and determination throughout the day, refusing to be intimidated by some of Sheffield's strongest teams.

Although results did not always reflect the quality of their performances, they pushed every opponent to the limit – including the eventual tournament champions. Their teamwork, effort and positivity never wavered, earning them enormous credit and proving exactly why they deserved their place at the Sheffield Finals.

YEAR 6 BOYS CHARGE TO THE PODIUM!

Wednesday morning brought fresh challenges and fresh opportunities as our Y6 boys strode onto the dew-covered AstroTurf determined to make their mark - and make their mark they certainly did!

Two impressive victories and a hard-fought draw saw the boys storm through the group stage unbeaten and finish top of the table. Confidence was sky-high as the knockout rounds beckoned.

Against increasingly tough opposition, the boys continued to battle bravely. Ultimately, they fell only to the two teams that would go on to contest the final itself.

The reward? A magnificent third-place finish and the knowledge that they had competed toe-to-toe with the very best teams in Sheffield.

A fantastic achievement for a fantastic group of players.

GOAL CRAZY GIRLS LIGHT UP SHIRECLIFFE!

As the heavens opened above Shirecliffe, the SJF Y5/Y6 girls decided to provide some thunder of their own!

Goals rained down almost as heavily as the weather as the girls blasted six goals in their opening three matches to power into the second phase of the competition.

Then came a performance that will live long in the memory.

A sensational 7-0 demolition left spectators stunned as the girls produced wave after wave of attacking football. Chances flowed freely and our sharpshooters showed no mercy, finishing clinically to record one of the standout victories of the entire tournament.

The stage was perfectly set for a winner-takes-all showdown.

Standing between our girls and top spot was another unbeaten side. Fresh from their seven-goal masterclass, our undaunted SJF player took to the field brimming with confidence, but football can be a cruel game.

Despite creating opportunities and matching their opponents throughout, our girls found themselves frustrated by a stubborn defence. Then, with the clock ticking down, disaster struck as the opposition snatched a dramatic late winner against the run of play.

Heartbreaking? Yes, but defeat could not diminish the extraordinary effort, teamwork and spirit shown by our talented players throughout the day.

TRUE CHAMPIONS ON AND OFF THE PITCH!

Whilst goals, victories and league tables make the headlines, perhaps the greatest achievement of all was the way every SJF player conducted themselves throughout the tournament. Across both days, our children demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship, encouraging teammates, supporting one another and showing respect to opponents and officials alike.

Handshakes with referees, opponents and their staff; words of thanks to organisers; and impeccable manners throughout, truly reflected the values that make St John Fisher so special.

Their determination was outstanding.

Their teamwork was exceptional.

Their behaviour was exemplary.

And their sense of fun never disappeared.

A HUGE THANK YOU!

Congratulations to every SJF player who represented our school so brilliantly!

Special thanks must also go to Mr Murphy for his tireless work organising the teams and preparing the players so thoroughly for competition. Thanks also to Mr Pursehouse for his tremendous support across both days and to Mrs Grayson for her valuable assistance during the tournament, and for organising transport asnd dealing with logistics.

Finally, thank you to the organisers and hosts for delivering another fantastic event.

The results may be written in the record books, but one thing is certain:

Our SJF football stars have once again shown that they belong among the very best that Sheffield has to offer!
