Y1: Trains Old & New

3rd Feb 2020

Today we gave the Y1 children pictures of four different trains.

In groups they had to try and put them in order from the oldest to the newest.

They were encouraged to think carefully and to think of sensible reasons for their choices, using the word 'because' in their sentences too.

As a class we listened to each others' ideas and opinions before deciding, together, on the order. It was a great conversation and we spent lots of time practising and using the correct vocabulary to compare trains.

We used words like:

  • similar
  • different
  • old
  • older
  • new
  • newer

The children then created their own timeline and described the differences with possible reasons.
