Y1: Investigating Toys

13th Oct 2020

This week the children have been thinking about toys again.

We watched a video about toys over the years.

The children loved seeing all the old toys and were especially excited when they saw some from more recent years that they recognised!

We then investigated a range of toys (both old and newer) and discussed how we knew if they were old or newer.

Some of the children's ideas included:

  • looking worn out and very well played with or cuddled,
  • rusty
  • dirty
  • broken
  • the look of the material they are made from

We decided that older toys were less likely to be made from plastic.

The children really enjoyed having time to play with the toys and then completed a sorting activity in their books!

If you or grandparents have toys from childhood please do share them with your children.

Tomorrow the children will focus on teddy bears and learn about the very first teddy bear well over 100 years ago. We will look at how teddy bears used to look (long arms, snout and humped back) and how they look today. Children will be encouraged to look for similarities and differences.

As a class we will created a teddy bear time line showing bears from the oldest to the newest.

Weston Park museum has a permanent display of old toys that you may like to visit one day.
