Sports Majors' Update: Termly Awards

1st Mar 2024

In November, our SJF Sport’s Majors hosted their first ‘Spirit of the Games’ assembly - independently - in front of the whole school!

Honesty

This assembly centred around the term’s value of ‘honesty’, with the Sports Majors drawing examples from different sports, for example, rugby and explained how professional sportspeople demonstrate honesty in a competitive matches.

They then shared scripture (Matthew 5:8), to underline the importance of honesty in everyday life - and not just sport.

The Sports majors then asked the children to reflect on how honesty can make the world a better place, and to then think of their own examples when they have seen or experienced honesty. Various examples were then shared in assembly e.g. being honest about whether the ball went out for a throw in a game of football, to being honest with friends in the classroom.

The Sport’s Majors decided to award Y2 with the trophy for their determination (the value for the previous term) and we congratulated them! They also asked everyone to reflect on how they could be more honest this term, and what they could learn - with the promise that the class demonstrating honesty in the most obvious ways, receiving the honesty trophy next term.

Respect
The beginning of January began, as it usually does, with a special assembly introducing the termly value Respect, with the Sport’s Majors delivering their second assembly, completely independently.

Examples of respect were shared from the Book of Exodus and in a video that told the story of Moses.

The Sports Majors then asked pupils to pause for a moment of reflection, to think about those that they respect, and to also think about how it feels to be respected - and the role of respect in making the world a better place.

At the end of assembly, the Sports Majors awarded individual awards for honesty with Y1 winning the class trophy for demonstrating honesty during our 'Beat Your Best' challenges last term. Well done Y1!
