Y1 Science: Investigating Plants

14th Apr 2025

Today we have started our new Science topic, which focuses on plants. The children first thought carefully about all the things they already knew before sharing the things they still wondered about.

The children remembered that seeds grow into new plants, and each child planted a sunflower seed. They then completed the first page of their personal 'plant diary'. In the coming days and weeks they will monitor the seeds, noting changes and growth, before recording what they discover in their diaries each week.

Other activities that the children will complete, include painting a plant of their choice and looking very closely at a range of different seeds. The children were surprised to see how different the range of seeds were, some were very large, others looked like stones and some were tiny.

They also planted some cress in class which they will also check each day. Interestingly, by the end of the day everyone could already smell the cress seeds.

At home it would be great if you can investigate different plants that you have inside or in your garden. You could also investigate plants in local parks and woods too. You could plant your own seeds and borrow some non-fiction books about plants from your local library.
