Y1: Investigating Our School Grounds

16th Jun 2019

Last week we were thinking deeply about our the wonderful outside area that we have at our school.

We considered its main features such as:

  • trees
  • climbing frame
  • tables
  • benches

The children also considered whether these features were human or physical and added this to their research work.

We also thought about what we could learn from our environment using our senses.

What did we hear?

Smell?

See?

The children used their senses to learn more about the area around our school.

We have been learning how to read a plan view of school and had a go at drawing one ourselves. We remembered that it is as if we are passengers in an aeroplane looking down.

At first it was tricky for some of the children, however they were resilient and determined to learn how to draw a shape to represent the area covered by the building, even adding labels to help explain what their drawing represented.

The children worked well with one another, listening actively and taking turns in order to complete the challenge - and have fun!
