Y1 Mathematics: Exploring Tens and Ones!

20th May 2022

The children have been working so hard learning about place value.

They have been counting in 10s and adding on ones.

They know that the '2' digit in 23 is actually two tens and that this has a value of 20.

Using Dienes apparatus really helps to support the children in the early stages of learning about place value, because it helps them to embed their conceptual knowledge and understanding as it develops.

We then used picture representations to show amounts before moving on to more abstract ways of thinking about number and place value.
