Y1 Mathematics: Fractions, Exploring Halving...

22nd Apr 2024

Our Y1 children have been investigating how to find half of different shaped pieces of paper.

They knew that half means two equal parts and explored this by folding shapes carefully to create two equal parts.

Some folds did not work too well, creating two unequal parts, which enabled the children to talk about why it they were (or were not) halves - sharing their thoughts as the folds were made. It also gave the children an opportunity to practise folding.

The children were challenged to find different ways to cut a square to create 2 equal parts - or two halves.

Next we will move on to finding half of quantities of objects before going on to investigate quarters.

The children's Maths home learning next week will consolidate all this learning!
