FS2: Investigating in the Icy Weather

9th Jan 2026

In FS2, we decided to investigate whether the temperature in our outdoor area was freezing cold on Monday night, so we carried out an experiment. The children placed plastic items or leaves and twigs they had collected from the ground into their named cups of water. They were then asked to put their cups in a place where they predicted the water would freeze. We thought carefully about the icy areas we had noticed earlier that morning.

Look what we discovered! Even the dinosaurs needed rescuing!

Back in class, we discussed how some children’s water had frozen solid, while other cups were only slightly frozen and still watery. The children worked out that some parts of our outdoor area must be warmer, such as near the walls and trees, inside the playhouses, and under the shelter. We also talked about the areas that were colder and less sheltered, where the water had frozen solid.
