Y1 Meet the Fire Service!

30th Sep 2023

As a special 'wow' experience to start our new history topic that focuses on the Fire Service, our Y1 children were visited by our local firefighters.

They were able to ask lots of questions as well as see, firsthand, what a modern appliance looks like.

The firefighters showed the children metal ladders; a winch; cutting equipment; the many lights and sirens on the engine; the pump at the back; a huge range of equipment - and more.

During the visit the team received a 999 call; the children heard the radio and the fast response needed to leave...

Luckily the engine was able to return to school after the call so the children could continue the visit.

Back in class they recorded their observations by labelling photos of the engine.  Next lesson we will be investigating old fire engines and consider similarities and differences.

Our sincere thanks go to the crew from Birley Station for visiting and supporting our children's learning so brilliantly.
