Y2 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling

23rd Oct 2020

This week we have been learning about subordinating conjunctions.

We learned the conjunctions 'because' and 'that'.

These two conjunctions are used to add extra information.

We have been trying to recognise their use in sentences.

Children should recognise that:

  • 'because' is used to explain more about the main clause
    • e.g. My friend is having a party because it is her birthday.
    • '...because it is her birthday' explains why the friend is having a party

  • 'that' is used to explain a reason or a cause*
    • e.g. I am happy that my friend is coming for tea.
    • '...that my friend is coming for tea’ explains the reason for being happy

*Please note the word 'that' can be used in many different ways but we recommend it is used to explain a reason or a cause at this point in Year 2.
