This morning the GIST Road Safety team returned to school for our talk, which had been postponed due to the bad weather last week.
They also brought along a hybrid car to highlight the problem of not hearing the very quiet engine.
We talked about roadside and specifically the importance of holding a grownup's hand (making sure your grownup is between you and the road) and never walking right on the edge of the kerb when cars can pass close by.
We talked about when the children are older and might have a mobile phone that distracts them and stops them hearing or paying full attention to the traffic, especially when using earphones to listen to music for example.
The children were asked to stand close to the lorry and Mrs Walton & Mrs Darken were in the cab.
The children were quite surprised at how far away from the front of the vehicle they would have to stand before the driver would see them. (In the photo where all the children are stood in a line away from the vehicle, Mrs Darken and Mrs Walton could still not fully see the children).
We were asked to shout as loud as we could and the driver could still not hear us and we were told that because the lorry was so big and heavy it would not be able to stop straight away.
The children are all bringing reflective snap wrist bands home tonight in their school bags.
