The SJF Eco Team Update: The Big Bird Watch!

12th Feb 2025

This week, our SJF Eco Team members braved the wintery weather in order to complete the bird watch and gather data in support of the RSPB. They checked trees and bushes at the perimeter of the school, looking for (and tallying) the different species of birds visiting our school.

They observed wood pigeons, black-headed gulls, magpies and robins, all of which play vital roles to the local environment.

Charlotte and Niamh, two of Y5 Eco Team members shared some of their thoughts...

"The most interesting bird to see was a black-headed gull, it was surprising to see one so far inland. The bird that we saw the least of was the starling, which shows how they are not as common as they were in the past. The bird we saw the most commonly was the wood pigeon, and we think they were the noisiest birds too!"

The SJF Eco Team will submit their data to the RSPB, and we thank them on behalf of the RSPB for their diligence and hard work in supporting this project.

The SJF Eco Team will decide on our next project after the holiday.
