SJF Eco Team Update: Did You Cut Your Carbon?

5th Dec 2024

Mrs Steenson, Coordinator

This week sees the close of the Eco Team’s Cut Your Carbon challenge, a checklist that was available to all with tasks that will help us to become more eco-friendly.

During our recent meeting, the children spoke about why it is so important that we make changes, as well as how difficult they found meeting the challenge themselves!

They learned that:

  • turning down the heating by just one degree didn’t feel colder, but it does save a lot of carbon emissions
  • trying plant-based food, even for just a day was the trickiest challenge, but those who managed to agreed it was a pleasant surprise
  • timing showers showed us how long they can be and they asked themselves how they could cut this time down in order to save water and energy

The children will be looking at the final data in the next meeting, and we invite anyone who tried the challenges to let their class Eco Team member know, as well as how difficult they found the tasks.

Did you make any changes that you want to keep up?

Could you challenge your family and friends to take on the "Cut Your Carbon" tasks ready for the new year?

Chloe, a Y4 Eco Team member offered some amazing feedback from trying the challenges herself:

“I hope lots of people tried the challenges. I found eating plant-based food very easy, but my teammates didn’t. I have also been reminding my mum to check her energy app to keep our heating at an eco friendly level, and using a timer for showers – I think these are the small changes that are really achievable for everyone.”

The Eco Team has worked incredibly hard to make the "Cut Your Carbon" month a success, and I am so proud of them all for their hard work. Please return any checklists to your class Eco Team member, or let them know how you got on. The team will enjoy a festive treat before the end of term as we prepare to announce our next initiative in January.
