This week, our Eco Team members met to discuss our focus for this term, and, as a group, they decided that to join in with the RSPB’s 'Big School Bird Watch' campaign.
In recent years, sadly, the number of native birds in the UK has begun to fall. Housesparrows, starlings and blackbirds are finding it increasingly difficult to survive the destruction of their natural habitats alongrising pollution levels threaten their ability to breed, nest and find food sources.
Over the coming weeks, our Eco Team members will take time to explore different areas around the school grounds, searching for - and identifying - some of the different species of native birds that visit us.
They will then complete an RSPB checklist, counting numbers and observing any unusual habits they may show.
Jasper, one of our Y3 Eco Team Members, is looking forward to getting outdoors...
“Now that the snow and ice have gone, we can get closer to the trees and bushes. We are hoping to find nests that the birds make to get ready for their eggs in Spring. I think we will actually see a lot of different birds around our school because of all the bushes and trees we have.”
SJF Eco Team members will meet to discuss their findings over the coming weeks, and share this with the RSPB to help them with their campaign and we thank Mrs Steenson for her work in coordinating the team!
